The bar chart illustrates the number of men and women attending four evening courses at an adult education centre in 2009, while the pie chart shows the age distribution of the participants.
Overall, more women than men attended most courses, and language classes were the most popular overall. In terms of age, the majority of participants were aged 50 or over.
Looking more closely, around 40 women attended language courses, compared to about 20 men. Painting was also popular, attracting roughly 30 women and 25 men. In contrast, drama classes were less attended, with about 20 women and 10 men taking part. Sculpture had the fewest participants, with around 10 men and only 5 women.
Regarding age, older learners dominated the courses. People aged 50 or over made up the largest group at 42%, followed by those aged 40-49, who accounted for 26%. Participants aged 30-39 represented 16%, while younger age groups were much smaller, with 11% aged 20-29 and only 5% under 20.
In summary, language and painting were the most popular courses, especially among women, and most students were middle-aged or older adults.
