The bar chart illustrates the proportion of New Zealander males and females who did physical activity on a regular basis in 2010 across different age categories.
Overall, women were in a leading position in almost all age categories, except for the youngest age group. Additionally, males represented a relatively higher figure in the 14 to 23 age group, whereas for females, the most popular age range for sport activities was 44 to 53.
Focusing on the first half of the age groups, the percentage of males aged 14 to 23 peaked at 51.7, while only 46.9% of women engaged in sport activities, making it the lowest share for females. As for those aged 24 to 33, males and females stood at 43.1 and 49.2 respectively, compared to the age group between 34 and 43, whose figures recorded just 38.8 for men, whereas women accounted for 53.1.
Turning to the remaining age categories, the proportion of males aged 44 to 53 was far lower at 42.9 than that of females, whose percentage was 54.2. Males aged 54 to 63 accounted for 42.9, compared to 52.8 for females. This was followed closely by seniors, whose respective shares were 47.2 and 48.1, where the gap narrowed down in comparison with the previous age group.
