In 1999, the rate of telephone use among persons under the age of 15 increased by 6 percent, while it decreased by 8 percent among the 16- to 30-year-old group.By 2000, the percentage of 15-year-olds using a phone was 9%, but in the 16-30 age group the usage rate decreased by 1%, so the total percentage reached 44%.
As for users of other ages, in 1998 31-51 year olds accounted for 41 percent of phone use, compared to 4 percent of users over 50. In 1999, the percentage of users over the age of 50 increased by 4%, while the percentage of users aged 31-50 decreased by 2%. By 2000, the share of users aged 31-50 had dropped another 2% to a total of 37%, but the share of those over 50 had increased another 2% to a total of 10%.
