The bar chart illustrates the percentage of people in five different age groups who attended three types of music events—classical, opera, and popular—in Australia in 2006.
Overall, popular music was the most attended genre, especially among the younger age groups, while classical music consistently attracted the smallest audiences. Opera concerts, on the other hand, were relatively more popular among older participants.
Attendance at popular music events was highest among those aged 15-24, at 38%. Participation then declined with age, falling to 27% for the 25-34 group and 33% for those aged 35-44. Attendance dropped significantly among older people, with only 13% of the 45-54 group and 5% of those aged 55 and above going to such events.
Opera showed a different pattern, attracting between 11% and 15% of audiences in most groups, with its highest share among those aged 35-44 (25%). It also became the most popular type of music event among people aged 45 and above, surpassing popular music. By contrast, classical music consistently drew the smallest proportions, with only around 10% attendance in all age categories.
