The bar chart compares the percentage of families who owned a car in a specific European country from 1971 to 2001.
Overall, there was a stark decline in the proportion of households without a car. In particular, car ownership for those with one or two cars increased, with the former reaching the highest prevalence.
In 1971, nearly half of the households did not own a car, comprising about 47%. Over the next decade, this figure markedly fell by around 5 percentage points, then saw a remarkable plunge of another 17% from 1991 onwards.
The remaining categories exhibited families possessing one or two cars, with the figures showing wild fluctuations. The percentage of one-car household started the period at 35%, followed by a marginal drop of 5% in 1981. After reaching its peak at approximately 47% the following decade, the figure began to decline by 4%. The ratio of households owning two or more cars began at 15%, experiencing an almost two-fold increase in 1981, fluctuated between 27% and 20% until 2001.
