The bar chart illustrates literacy rate’s between men and women in seven regions in 2011 . Overall male literacy rate are consistently higher than female rates across all regions, even thought the extent of the gender gap varies significantly.
Central Asia and Eastern Europe have the highest literacy rates in these seven regions with both males and females exceeding 95% and showing almost any gender disparity. Similarly, East Asia and Pacific, as well as Latin America and the Caribbean exhibit high literacy rates of around 90% with only minor differences between genders.
Conversely,regions such as South and West Asia , Sub -Saharan Africa and The Arab States show more pronounced gender gaps. South and West Asia has the largest disparity with about 80% of men being literate compared to only 60% of women. Sub-Saharan Africa follows a similar figure where male literacy is about 70% and female literacy is lower at around only 60% . The Arab States also display a significant gap , though the overall literacy rates are slightly higher.
In summary, while some regions show almost equal literacy rates for both genders, other especially South and West Asia and Sub Saharan Africa demonstrate a considerable gap between male and female rates.
