The bar graph compares the proportion of four physical activities preferred by the Australian younger generation in 2010. Overall, the percentage of girls in swimming and netball was much higher than boys, while the reverse was true for football and basketball. Notably, the biggest proportional discrepancy was observed in the football and netball activities. It is also clear that there were quite a few young people who did not prefer doing sports after school.
Focusing on the biggest differences first, the proportion of female students was considerably lower than that of their male counterparts, with the respective figures of close to 5% and 20%. Compared to football, female students who played in netball accounted for a higher percentage than their male counterparts, 17% and 20% respectively.
However, the remaining categories experienced a similar interest among the young generation. The percentage of female students in swimming accounted for just above 15%, while the figure for male counterparts stood at 13%. Compared to swimming, basketball experienced less interest among young people; the figure for girls was not much lower than boys, accounting for 8% and 7% respectively. The figures for girls and boys who did not prefer participating in a physical activity were the lowest, at around 5%.
