Overall, drama, comedy, and fantasy films in both release and ticket sales showed increases, albeit to varying extents, whereas the opposite trend was observed for romance in both charts.It is also clear that drama and comedy were more active in ticket sales and films released, compared to the remaining categories.
Looking first at films released, the percentage of drama films stood at about 26% initially, a figure that rose gradually to 35% in 2006, the highest rate among all film genres.These were followed by comedy and fantasy, which increased from 20% and 13% to 25% and 16% over a decade, respectively. Finally, the figure for romance exhibited a slight fall from 6% in 1996 to 5% in 2006.
Turning to ticket sales, comedy films stood out in both years in terms of percentages, making up 20% in 1996 and growing modestly to 23%. Drama and fantasy also experienced increases, rising from 16% to 17% and from 3% to 7%, respectively.However, there was a halving in the share of romance from 5% to 2.5%.
