The chart shows the proportion of families that do not own a car and have one or more cars in European countries over the period of 3 decades ,from 1971 to 2001.
In general, the rate of not owning a car tended to decrease throughout the period. Meanwhile, the percentage of families with one or more cars increased significantly.
At the beginning of the period, the proportion of families who owned one car accounted for only 1/3 of households and more than two cars accounted for only 1/5.In 1981, there was a change. The number of households who did not own a car and owned one car both decreased slightly by about 4%.In addition, the percentage of households with more than two cars increased quickly, from 15% to about 28%.
By 1991, the proportion of families with one car peaked at about 46%.The percentage of families that do not own a car has decreased by 1/3 , to about 30%.Families with more than two cars went down to just over 20%.By the last year, the percentage of families without a car and had one decreased slightly by 3%.In contrast, the proportion of households with more than two cars increased by about 5%.
