The bar graph illustrates the global sales (in billions of dollars) of four types of digital games—Mobile Phone Games, Online Games, Console Games, and Handheld Games—from 2000 to 2006.
Between 2000 and 2006, Handheld Games consistently dominated the market. Sales of Handheld Games started at around $11 billion in 2000 and saw a steady increase, peaking at approximately $18 billion in 2006. This category maintained its lead over the others throughout the entire period.
Console Games began the period as the second most popular category, with sales just under $6 billion in 2000. However, their growth was modest compared to Handheld Games, and from 2004 onwards, their sales remained relatively stable at around $4-5 billion, eventually being overtaken by Mobile Phone Games and Online Games by 2006.
Mobile Phone Games and Online Games showed significant growth over this period. Mobile Phone Games, which were non-existent in 2000, began to gain traction by 2002 and reached around $7 billion by 2006. Similarly, Online Games, also starting from zero, experienced a noticeable rise starting in 2001 and achieved sales close to $9 billion by 2006.
