Male started at 3000 people, increased gradually and peaked at just slight below 6000 participants by the end of the period. Females, on the other hand, only had about 150 participants at the beginning. The number then grew slightly to about 1500 in 1984, before rose sharply to approximately 4.700 participants by 2012.
Regarding the total number of atheletes competed, the number stood at around 3000 atheletes in 1924. However, the figure almost doubled in 1952, rose moderately to roughly 6.800 participants by 1984, increased dramatically and peaking at around 10.200 atheletes in 2012.
