The pie chart illustrates the percentage of Australians by place of birth in 2003, while the line graph details the unemployment rate between 1993 and 2003 among three groups: those born in Australia, in English-speaking countries other than Australia (ESC), and in non-English-speaking countries (NESC).
In general, it can be seen clearly that a large percentage of the workforce in Australia in 2003 was native-born, accounting for 76%. Workers from ESC and NESC made up significantly smaller proportions, at 10% and 14%, respectively.
In 1993, the proportion of unemployed workers who were born in NESC was about 7%. These figures for Australia and ESC were lower, at about 4% and 3%, respectively. In 1995, unemployment in both Australia and ESC decreased sharply to around 2.5% of the population. In 1998, jobless people born in NESC accounted for approximately 3% of the labor force and saw a modest decline to just over 3.4% in 2003. The ESC followed a similar path, slightly above that of Australia.
