The two bar charts compare the number of different-sized households in the UK in 1981 and 2001.
In both years, smaller households (1- and 2-person) were more common than larger ones. The percentage of 1-person households increased by 9%, from 17% in 1981 to 26% in 2001. The percentage of 2-person households also increased, from 31% to 34% in the same period, making them the most popular type of household in both years.
On the other hand, households with 3, 4, 5, and 6 members decreased in percentage over the 20-year period. The sharpest decline was in 6-person households, dropping from 6% to 2%. Five-person households decreased by 2%, while 4- and 3-person households both decreased by 3%, ending up at 15% and 17% in 2001, respectively.
