The table demonstrates how many people live in families in the UK in 1981 and 2001.
Overall, it is clear that in both years small families accounted for the bigger share, while the opposite was true for families consisting of many people. It is also worth mentioning that, families with two people accounted for highest share in both years.
Looking at the details, in 1981 the percentage of one person household was 17%, whereas in 2001 it rose to 26%. The share for two people living together increased slightly from 31% to 34% .
Regarding bigger families, the proportion of three and four people households decreased to same 3% from 20% and 18% to 17% and 15%, respectively. When it comes families consisting of five people, it dropped to 2% making it 6% in 2001. Finally, the share for households listed as biggest number of people living together showed highest decrease at 4% from 6% in 1981 to almost 2% in 2001.
