The charts illustrate where dance classes for young people in an Australian town are held and the types of classes attended by two age groups (under 11 and 11-16).
Overall, most classes take place in private studios, while college-based studios account for the smallest proportion. In terms of dance styles, ballet is the most popular among younger children, whereas modern dance is preferred by teenagers.
Regarding location, nearly half of all classes (48%) are conducted in private studios. School halls (after-school programmes) represent the second most common venue, making up 24% of classes. Community halls and other venues account for 18%, while only 10% of classes are held in college-based studios, the lowest figure among the four categories.
Looking at the types of dance classes, ballet is particularly popular with children under 11, with approximately 600 students enrolled, compared to around 300 students aged 11-16. Tap dancing attracts a similar number of students in both age groups, with about 450 younger children and just over 400 teenagers participating. In contrast, modern dance is more popular among older students, with just above 500 participants aged 11-16, compared to roughly 300 under-11s.
In summary, private studios dominate as venues for dance classes, and preferences for dance styles vary notably by age group.
