The bar chart compares the percentages of males and females participating in the most popular sports in the UK in 2008.
Overall, there were clear differences between male and female participation in certain sports. Men were more involved in sports such as soccer and cricket, while women showed a strong preference for swimming and especially netball. In addition, some activities, including tennis and basketball, recorded relatively similar participation rates for both genders.
In terms of male participation, soccer was by far the most popular sport, accounting for approximately 25%. This was followed by “other” sports at around 20%. Cricket also attracted a noticeable proportion of men, at about 10%, whereas table tennis and basketball were slightly lower, at roughly 12% and 8% respectively. By contrast, very few men took part in jogging and netball, both remaining below 5%.
Regarding female participation, netball was the most dominant sport, with about 25% of women involved. Swimming was also highly popular among females, at just over 20%, which was significantly higher than the figure for men. Meanwhile, tennis and basketball showed similar participation rates for both genders, at around 7-8%. On the other hand, cricket was the least popular sport among women, with only a small percentage taking part.
