In 2005, there were 70 million tonnes of waste disposed of in landfills, but this figure steadily dropped by 10 million each passing year before reaching 40 million tonnes in 2008. Similarly, roughly 53 million tonnes of rubbish were dumped into the sea at the beginning of the period. After decreasing to 50 million in 2006, it remained constant throughout that whole year. By 2008, this number recorded a sharp decline to 40 million tonnes.
