Overall, there was a significant decline in the number of landfills and dumping at sea over the three-year period from 2005 to 2008.. The amount of waste burial burned had the same trend in the first three years but shifted to an opposite trend at the end of the period.
Firstly, in 2005, landfill waste reached a peak of 70 million tonnes, and then gradually fell to 60 million tonnes in 2006 and ended at 40 million tonnes in 2008. In addition, the amount of waste dumped into the sea was 55 million tonnes in the first year, and then slightly declined to 50 million in the following year, remained stable at 50 million in 2006 and steadily decreased to 40 million tonnes in the last year.
Moreover, waste burned was approximately 65 million tonnes in the initial year, slightly decreased to 60 million in the following year. Subsequently, in 2007, the amount of waste burned dropped to 40 million. However, by the end of the period, it had increased to the same level as in 2005.
