The line graph illustrates changes in the number of burglaries, car thefts, and robberies in Manchester city centre between 2003 and 2012.
Overall, burglary was the most common crime at the beginning of the period but declined sharply over time, while car theft showed an overall upward trend and became the most frequent offence by the end. Robbery remained the least common crime throughout and fluctuated only slightly.
In 2003, burglaries stood at about 3400 incidents, rising to a peak of roughly 3700 in 2004. After that, the figure fell dramatically, reaching a low of around 1000 in 2008. Although there was a modest recovery to approximately 1400 in 2011, the number declined again slightly in 2012.
Car theft began at just over 2200 cases in 2003 and experienced minor fluctuations during the first half of the period. From 2008 onwards, it increased steadily, climbing to about 2700 incidents in 2012, the highest level recorded on the chart.
Robbery figures were significantly lower, starting at around 500 cases in 2003. After peaking at about 800 in 2005, the number dropped to roughly 400 in 2008 before rising modestly again and ending the period at around 500.
