The line chart shows changes in three types of crime in the city centre of Manchester between 2003 and 2012. The crimes shown are burglary, car theft and robbery.
Overall, burglary decreased significantly over the period, while car theft showed a gradual increase. Robbery remained the least common crime and changed only slightly.
In 2003, burglary was the most common crime at about 3,400 cases. It increased slightly and reached a peak of around 3,700 in 2004. After that, the number fell sharply to about 2,500 in 2006 and continued to decline to around 1,000 in 2008. From 2009 onwards, burglary rose a little but stayed relatively low, ending at about 1,300 in 2012.
Car theft started at approximately 2,200 cases in 2003. The figure fluctuated slightly until 2008, but after that it increased steadily. By 2010 it reached about 2,500 and finished the period at around 2,700 in 2012, becoming the most common crime.
Robbery had the lowest numbers throughout the period. It began at around 500 cases in 2003, increased to about 800 in 2005, and then dropped to roughly 400 in 2008. In the following years it rose slightly again and ended at about 500 in 2012
