The line graph illustrates the changes in three types of crime in burglary, car theft, and robbery in Newport city centre between 2003 and 2012.
Overall, burglary showed a significant decline over the period, while car theft fluctuated but ended as the most common crime. Robbery remained the least frequent type throughout the years, with relatively small changes.
In 2003, burglary was the most common crime at around 3,400 incidents, rising to a peak of approximately 3,700 in 2004. However, it then fell steadily, reaching its lowest point of about 1,100 cases in 2008. After that, burglary increased slightly before declining again to around 1,300 incidents by 2012.
Car theft began at about 2,800 cases in 2003 and experienced minor fluctuations over the next few years. It dropped to just over 2,000 incidents in 2006 but gradually increased afterward. By 2012, car theft had risen to approximately 2,700 cases, making it the most common crime at the end of the period.
Robbery accounted for the smallest number of incidents throughout the timeframe. It rose modestly from around 700 in 2003 to nearly 900 in 2005, then declined to about 500 in 2008. In the final years, robbery fluctuated slightly and finished at approximately 600 cases.
