The bar chart illustrates how many different kinds of vehicles were registered from 1996 to 2006. Overall, the registration of private cars and other types saw an upward trend with the former being by far the most common and the latter registering the most pronounced change. Additionally, while the quantity of motorcycles and lorries used declined, that for bus, coach and taxi stayed unchanged.
Looking at the increasing categories, 19 million private automobiles were registered in 1996, followed by a noticeable rise of 26.32% to an all-time high of 24 million in the next decade, outnumbering other categories by a significant margin. Meanwhile, although having the second highest level of registration, other means of transport witnessed a massive 58.33% rise to 2 million in the last year.
In terms of the remaining vehicles, buses, coaches and taxis were the least common, with a leveling off of only 0.1 million vehicles being in use throughout the period. Finally, the quantity of motorcycles registered in 1996 was 1 million, double that of lorries. However, by the next decade, both modes of transport had been used less, as motorcycles plummeted by 40%, which was two times higher than the rate at which lorry registration dropped.
