The bar chart shows how many road vehicles were registered for use in a particular European country in two years: 1996 and 2006.
Overall, there was an upward trend in the registration of private cars and other vehicle types, while lorries and motorcycles took the opposite direction, except for buses, whose figures remained unchanged. Among these categories, private cars had the highest registration in both years.
At the beginning of the period, approximately 10 million private cars were recorded on the official list, which was by far the largest, while a minimal number of motorcycles, trucks, and public transport vehicles were registered; all were less than 1 million. Apart from the four categories mentioned above, the registration of other types altogether ranked second, but still, the figure was below 2 million in 1996.
After a decade, the number of automobiles registered for private use witnessed a substantial increase, hitting a record high of 24 million. The trend for other types of transport was relatively similar, although the magnitude of change was less pronounced, with 1.9 million vehicles recorded in 2006. Conversely, the figures for motorcycles and lorries experienced a downward shift, declining to 0.6 and 0.4 million vehicles, respectively, at the end of the period. Finally, the number of registered buses in use remained stable at 0.1 million.
