Overall, it can be seen that figures for all countries witnessed upward trends (except for China). In addition,the figure for Americans surpassed Chinese since 2006.
In 2004, the number of Chinese students who apply to the university was under 28000, while there were exactly 20000 students from the US. The figure for Japan and Russia was lower, at over 7000 and more than 2000 respectively.
From that time on, China saw a decrease of 3000 students in 2005 and 2006, before continuing to decline to over 17000 in 2008. By contrast, the US saw a significant increase by 10000 in 2008. Likewise, the figure for Japanese and Russian witnessed a steady rise during the whole period, with an increase of approximately 5000 students applying to the university.
