Overall, there was a significant rise in the number of candidates from Japan while the reverse trend can be seen in the figures for those coming from China, the USA, or Russia. In addition, the figures for Japan and China were by far the most dominant throughout the period, but for the Russian applicants, became the lowest figures during the surveyed years.
The number of Chinese candidates started at the highest position with just over 27000, after which it experienced a dramatic fall to approximately 28000 in 2006 and remained unchanged in the next year, before a final drop to 25000 in 2008. Converse change, but to a greater extent, was seen in the figure for Japan, which consistently rose from nearly 14000 in 2004 to just under 27000 in 2008.
About 13000 applicants submitted to one university in Europe were American in 2004, with a subsequent stability in the first two years but then it grew considerably from around 7000 in 2006 to precisely 10000 in the ended year. Meanwhile, despite a mild fluctuation, the figure for Russia increased with a negligible quantity throughout the given years, enjoying the least concentrated country in terms of applying to a particular European university.
