Overall, over the first half, China was the highest applicant, the USA had the largest number of applicants over the second half, whereas the reverse was true for Russia. In addition, except for the USA and Japan, two other continents witnessed a decrease or remained unchanged.
On the one hand, China dominated international applicants to the universities, with more than 25000; this was by far more than Russian applicants in 2004. Moreover, the former witnessed a consistent decrease to approximately 15000, while the latter remained unchanged around nearly zero, reaching the lowest position.
On the other hand, the USA students who applied to an international university numbered around 13000; this was around twice as many as Japanese applicants, in 2004. Toward the end of the period, the American students witnessed a notable increase in the number of applicants to more than 25,000, reaching the top positions, followed by Japanese applicants witnessed a twofold rise compared to the initial levels, at 10,000.
