The bar chart demonstrates the gender distribution of scholars doing scientific research across a range of desciplines at a UK university in 2009.
In five of the six desciplines males outnumbered females. Male students maintained a particularly large proportion of the student group in three fields: physics, astronomy, and geology. The gender gap was particularly large in the field of physics, Where there were five times as many male students as female students.
Men and women were more equally represented in other three subjects: biology, medicine, and veterinary medicine. In the field of biology, there were nearly as many male students [approximately 240] as women students [approximately 200]. This was also true of medicine. Veterinary medicine was the only field in which women outnumbered men and women represented better than men.
Overall, the chart illustrates that at this university, most of the science raleted subjects were/are? more male-dominated; however, women have a significant presence in medicine, biology, and veterinary medicine.
