The given line chart illustrates the proportion of Australian people who were born in other countries of the world from 1976 to 2011.
As is evident from the graph, with the exception of Asia, all categories underwent upward trends over the period shown. Additionally, the total number of Australians born in different places of the world fluctuated significantly. It is also notable that the figure for the UK was surpassed and took the least from early 1998 onwards.
Regarding the countries that witnessed overall increases in the percentage of Australians born in other countries, the UK took the leading position at about 14%, while the figure for other countries was moderately lower, standing at about 11% in the same year. Then the figure for the UK significantly declined to 5% in the last year of the period examined. It is also notable that the figure for other countries surpassed that in the UK from 1992 onwards before ending the period at approximately 12%.
In the meanwhile, Asia had the lowest number of Australians born in their place, at about 2,5%, which was considerably lower than the highest figure. Subsequently, it experienced a dramatic growth to 7,5% in roughly 1998, surpassing the UK to take the second position. This was followed by a considerable rise to reach its peak of 15% and surpassed the figure for other countries to take the lead in 2011. As to the total figure, it started at less than 30% then it experienced a considerable decrease to roughly 22% in 1991 and a final increase to about 33% in 2011.
