The bar chart compares the percentage of households in owned accommodation and that in rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
As an overview, in the first four years of the given period, people preferred to rent accommodation rather than buying, as opposed to the last four years, when owning accommodation was appealed by the majority of people.
From 1918 to 1961, more accommodations were rented by people instead of buying them. The highest percentage of households in rented accommodation was 80% in 1918, followed by 69% in 1953, 68% in 1939, and 59% in 1961. In contrast, only 24%, the lowest percentage of households, bought accommodation in 1918, while almost the same percentages of households, at 32%, purchased accommodation in 1939 and 1953.
On the contrary, it can be seen that the percentage of households in owned accommodation increased significantly, with the figures being between 60% and 70% respectively, in the last four years. The trend was totally reversed for households in rented accommodation, halving the previous figures. However, exactly the same percentage, 50%, of households in rented and owned accommodation can be observed in 1971.
