The bar chart compares the percentage of owning and renting accommodation in both England and Whales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, the proportion of households in owned accommodation increased, while the rented one decreased with the exception of the year 2011, and in 1971 both of them experienced the same percentage.
“Households in owned accommodation” had the lowest rate in 1918 at just over 20%. While it remained stable in both 1939 and 1953, it increased steadily and reached it peak in 2001 at a little bit less than 70%. Then fallen to just over 60%.
In contrast, “households in rented accommodation” had an opposite pattern. Initially, in 1918, it has the largest contribution in the chart at a bit less than 80%. Similarly to owning them, renting was steady in both 1939 and 1953 at just less than 70%. After that, it decreased until 2001, which had the lowest percentage in its chart at just over 30%, followed by 2011 that experimented more at about less than 40%.
