The bar chart shows the percentage of Internet users in Canada who were online shoppers in six age groups in 2014 and 2018.
Overall, the proportion of those shopping online generally decreased as people aged in the two years examined, with the year 2018 consistently witnessing higher online shopping rates in all age ranges. Additionally, the majority of people purchasing on the Internet were 15 to 55 years old in both years.
Regarding the 15-45 age range, one in five Canadians in the youngest group shopped online in 2014, which was about 5% lower than the figure in 2018. Meanwhile, just over 30% of 26-to-35-year-olds did so in 2014, which was the highest this year, at the same gap compared to 2018. However, the disparity doubled in the figure for the 35-to-45 cohorts, at around 28% in 2014 in comparison to roughly 38% in 2018.
As for the others, the gap remained relatively unchanged with age in both years. Specifically, the share of Canadians between 45 and 55 years old shopping on the Internet in 2014 was just over 20%, in comparison to approximately 28% in 2018. Finally, the figures for the 55-to-65 age bracket and the oldest group were much lower, with just over 10% and 5%, respectively in 2014, and about 18% and just above 10% in that order in 2018.
