Overall, the proportion of oil remained the most significant source of energy. The rate of natural gas, coal, and renewable resources increased, whereas nuclear energy slightly decended.
To begin with 1985, the ratio of oil was the major energy source, accounting at 52% of total. This figure dropped to 39% in 2003. Similarly, the segment of nuclear energy take over at 22% in 1985 and fell to 17% in 2003. On the other hand the increment of hydrogen unchanged at 4% in both years.
By contrast, the ratio of natural gas production grew 10% from 13% in 1985 to 23% in 2003. The percentage of coal rose from 8% to 13%. And the portion of other renewable resources saw a notable rise, from 1% in 1985 to 4% in 2003.
