The bar chart compares the percentage of residents in five Australian cities who bought fresh coffee, bought instant coffee, or went to a café for coffee or tea during the previous four weeks.
Overall, visiting cafés was the most popular activity in all five cities, while buying fresh coffee was generally the least common. In addition, people in Hobart and Melbourne were the most likely to go to cafés.
Around 61% of people in Sydney visited a café, compared with about 45% who bought instant coffee and 44% who purchased fresh coffee. Similarly, in Melbourne, approximately 63% of residents went to a café, while 48% bought instant coffee and only 43% bought fresh coffee.
Brisbane and Adelaide showed a similar pattern. In Brisbane, 55% of people went to a café and 53% bought instant coffee, whereas just 34% purchased fresh coffee. In Adelaide, the figures for going to a café and buying instant coffee were both around 50%, while fresh coffee was bought by only 35% of residents.
Hobart recorded the highest percentage of café visitors at about 64%. It also had the highest proportion of instant coffee buyers, at 54%, while only 39% of people bought fresh coffee.
