The charts illustrate how many foreign-born residents live in each of the five countries in the years 2000 and 2020 along with their proportion in each country in 2020.
Overall, the number of transnational movers grew in Germany, the UK and the USA, whereas in Russia and India (having the least amount of migrants) it decreased insignificantly. Although USA takes the top place in the highest number of migrants, Germany has the highest share of cross-border movers in it’s population.
The graph shows that the USA takes the lead in the total number of migrants, both in 2000 (34 million) and 2020 (50 million), increasing considerably by approximately 15 million foreigners. The quantity went up in Germany and the UK as well, Germany improved by a quarter with 12 million and the UK doubled in its number from 4 million to 9 million migrants. Conversely, both India and Russia declined in the number of movers from around the world. Compared with 2000, India went down from 6 million by about 2 million people and Russia lost from 11 million slightly less than 1 million.
The table states that Germany, the UK and the USA had approximately the same proportion of migrants in their populations, revolving around 14%. Germany had the highest rate of 14,7% whereas the UK and the USA had 14% and 13,5% respectively. In comparison, India and Russia had far smaller shares, with Russia having 8,1% of migrants in their population and India taking the last place, where only 0,4% of all residents were foreign movers.
