Overall, car theft was by far the most common crime over the period. Additionally, house burgling and car theft recorded a similar pattern of changes, meanwhile, street robbery remained relatively stable between 1970 and 2005 in two countries.
In terms of car theft, the figures experienced a gradual increase, rising from 0.40 million in 1970 to 1 million in 1990, before climbing dramatically to reach a peak at 1.60 million in 1996. Subsequently, the number of car theft declined progressively and returned to its 1990 level by 2005.
Regarding the remaining categories, house burgling underwent frequent changes over the period, whereas street robbery followed a more stable trend. The figure for house burgling surpassed the other categories, which grew considerably and became the prevalent crime with 0.90 million in 1980. After that, it decreased sharply to 0.60 million in 1985, then edged up and remained stable at 0.70 million, before declining to 0.5 million in 2005.
