Overall, football maintained its dominance as the most popular sport throughout the whole period. While the proportion of people engaging in golf, tennis and snooker witnessed a downward trend, other categories underwent opposite patterns with slight fluctuation.
In terms of the first year – 1995, more than two fifths of the total respondents were interested in football, followed by snooker and tennis at around 30%. Additionally, the percentage of individuals playing golf accounted for approximately a quarter, being half as much as the first-ranked sport. Meanwhile, swimming and rugby were left behind, with these respective figures being about 22% and 24%.
When it comes to the remaining years, football remained its popularity when experiencing a constant increase to around 44%. Regardless of the similar growth, while rugby declined significantly before rebounding to nearly 28% in 2005, swimming underwent the reverse trend. Nevertheless, there was a dramatic decline of snooker and tennis, both of which accounted for around 22% at the end of the period. Following a similar trend, golf started experiencing a decrease in 2000 before rising slightly in the next five years.
