The chart illustrates the distribution of workers by gender across six different professions (Advertising, Teaching, Construction, Therapists, Journalism, Scientists, Law) in the UK in 2007. Units are given in percentage.
Overall, the only profession with an equal gender distribution is Journalism, with 50% male and 50% female workers. Other pofessions such as Scientists, Law and Advertising show moderate differences between the two groups. However, there are significant gender gaps in Teaching, Construction and Therapists.
A clear majority of women chose to work in teaching or therapy, with around 90% and 80% respectively, in contrast to the low male percentage. Following these, Advertising, Journalism, Scientists and Law had more or less similar percentages, without stark constrasts. Finally, for women, construction was the least chosen profession of all.
On the contrary, the top profession for male workers was Construction, with the highest percentage of around 90%. Scientists and Law were a close second, followed closely by Journalism and Advertising. Finally, the percentage declined precipitously with Teaching and Therapists, in fact they registered less than 20% of male workers.
