The bar chart compares the number of male and female cinemagoers who watched four different film genres in 2018, while the pie chart illustrates the age distribution of cinema audiences.
Overall, action films were by far the most popular genre among men, whereas women showed a stronger preference for historical dramas and westerns. In terms of age, people aged 26-44 constituted the largest segment of cinema-goers, while those aged 56 and above accounted for only a small minority.
Looking first at the bar chart, action films attracted the highest number of viewers overall. Approximately 46 million men watched this genre, compared with around 29 million women. A similar pattern can be observed in the case of romantic comedies, where male audiences outnumbered female audiences by 11 million, at 37 million and 26 million respectively.
By contrast, women were more interested in historical dramas and westerns. Historical dramas were viewed by about 30 million women, exceeding the figure for men by 6 million. Likewise, westerns attracted roughly 7 million female viewers, compared with only 5 million males, making this the least popular genre among both genders.
Turning to the pie chart, adults aged 26-44 represented the largest proportion of cinema audiences, accounting for 38% of the total. The 18-25 age group was the second-largest category, comprising 31% of cinemagoers. Meanwhile, individuals aged 45-55 made up a quarter of the audience. In contrast, people aged 56 and over constituted just 6%, making them the smallest age group by a considerable margin
