The first bar chart illustrates the rates of marriages and divorces (in millions) from 1970 until 2000, while the second chart depicts the status of American adults (in percentages) in two years, 1970 and 2000.
Overall, on the first graph, the number of marriages outnumbered that of divorces. Furthermore, in both years, most adults in America were married.
According to the first chart, the number of marriages remained stable for a decade, from 1970 until 1980. Moreover, the number slightly fell by roughly 0.25 after each decade, dropped to around 2.25 million in 1990, and 2 million in 2000. In terms of divorce rates, the number slightly fluctuated throughout the years, with a peak of nearly 1.5 million in 1980 and a low of 1 million in 1970 and 2000.
