The bar charts illustrate the record of the USA marriage and divorce ratio from 1970 to 2000, and the marital status of American citizens in the years 1970 and 2000.
Overall, in the first chart, marriage rates were generally high. In contrast, divorce rates were the lowest in all three decades from 1970 to 2000. On the other hand, regarding marital status, the percentage of married people increased in 1970, and the percentage of divorced people decreased in 2000.
In explanation, the number of marriages trended from 1970 to 1980 with the same number, 2.5 million, then it fell gradually in 1990 with a recorded number of almost 2.3M, and after a decade in 2000, it was exactly 2M. However, the divorce rate was the same in both years, 1970 and 2000, with 1M only; it showed a slight rise in 1990 to almost 1.1M. But, it was highest of all three in 1980 with a proportion of 1.4M.
Turning to the other side, in 1970, the marriage rate was highest with 70% as compared to all three statuses: never married, widowed, and divorced, with minimal rates of 15%, 9%, and 1% respectively. Furthermore, in 2000, the marriage rate again stood at its peak, but with 60%, and the other three were at the bottom with 20%, 8%, and 9% respectively.
