The two pie charts compare the popularity of four different forms of transportation—walking, car, bicycle, and bus—in Cambridge in 2008 and 2018.
Overall, there was a notable shift in transportation preferences over the decade. Walking and cycling gained significant popularity, while car usage declined sharply.
In 2008, walking accounted for the smallest proportion of transport use at around 11%. However, by 2018, this figure had increased by almost 15%, bringing it to approximately 25%. Bicycle use followed a similar trend, starting at 17% in 2008 and rising dramatically to 30%, making it the most popular mode of transport by 2018.
In contrast, the use of cars and buses showed a downward trend. Cars, which were the most common form of transport in 2008 at over 40%, saw a steep decline of 22%, falling to just 18% in 2018, the lowest among all modes. Bus usage also decreased, but minimally, from 30% in 2008 to 25% in 2018, matching the proportion of walking by the end of the decade.
