The two pie charts compare the distribution of household spending among average middle-income families in 2012 and 2015. Overall, housing remained the largest category of household expenditure in both years. Spending in housing and foods/clothes increased, whereas the proportion of vacations/leisures and misc items decline in 2015.
In 2012, housing accounted for the largest proportion of household spending 35%. Both foods/clothes and vactions/ leisures represented 25% each, making them second largest proportion. Meanwhile the smallest share of the budget is spent on misc items which is 15% of the total expenditure.
In 2015, the proportion of spending on housing increased significantly to 50%, becoming half of the total household budget. Spending of foods/clothes also rose to 35%. In contrast, the percentage allocated in vacations/leisures dropped to 10% while misc items sharp declined further to 5%, representing the smallest category.
Overall, housing and foods/clothes together accounted significantly large share of household expenditure in 2015 compared with 2012.
