From a global perspective, over the 10 years in question, the largest percentage increase in annual spending was on rent. The other important point was the drastic drop in spending on leisure over the years.
Looking at the details. In 2012, the largest annual expense for a single person on average in Canada was leisure, accounting for 28%, followed by rent (25%), health care (21%), transportation (17%). In contrast, in 2022, the largest expense became rent, accounting for a sharp increase of 8%, followed by transportation at 24% and health care which remained constant with a low increase of 2%, rising 19%.
In addition, in the first year mentioned (2012), the lowest housing cost was groceries, at just 9%. Ten years later, the lowest cost was leisure (8%).
