The statistics illustrate the corresponding alterlation in the proportion of families owned appliances activated by electricity and how many hours each household spent on doing chores in one nation from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, there was an upward trend in all three electricial appliances, while the amount of time spent doing household tasks experienced a contrasting pattern. Moreover, although the percentage of households with washing machine held the leading position initially, from 1960 onwards, this position belonged to refrigerator and vacuum cleaner.
Regarding the proportion of households, in 1920, the figure for washing machine accounted for two-fifths of the total, which was the highest figure among all the categories, 10% higher than that of vacuum cleaner and about eight times more than that for refrigerator. After 40 years, washing machine significantly rose to 70% before witnessing a mild drop of almost 10%. In the final year, there was a slight growth to more than 70% in the figure for washing machine. The other appliacnes also experienced a whole time increase, with their figures being 100%.
Concerning the amount of time houseworks weekly took per household, in the first year, doing chores inchluding washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning took each family 50 hours per week. Thereafter, a significant decline of 20 hours was recorded, but from 1960 onwards, the amount of time gardually decreased, ending at just over 10 hours.
