The bar chart and table depict the duration dedicated to household chores and leisure activities by males and females in the UK in 2008.
Overall, women’s time budget was primarily for purchasing daily necessities, performing laundry tasks, and preparing meals, while men devoted more time to repairing household items. Indoor entertainment, such as watching TV, videos, and listening to the radio, was most preferred by both groups, whereas reading books or engaging in sports were the least favored.
Regarding househouse chores, housewives expended just over an hour (62 minutes) on cooking and washing up. Shopping and laundering accounted for slightly over 40 minutes of their daily routine, whereas reparing items took up only 20 minutes, which was half the time men spent on this activity and for cooking and washing. Shopping constituted a minor part of men’s day, with just 5 minutes dedicated to this activity.
In terms of leisure activities, screen time dominated the daily schedule for both groups, at 175 minutes for males and 158 minutes for females. Both genders also spent roughly 20 minutes on reading printed materials, and only about 13 minutes a day exercising.
