The bar charts give information about the effect of four types of noise by day and night on a number of people in Europe in rural and urban areas in 2007, with units measured in million people.
Overall, more people were affected by noise in the cities than in rural areas and they were less distracted by noise at night than during the day. Additionally, traffic noise was the most common issue during both day and night for people in the cities and in rural areas in 2007. Notably, no data was recorded for industrial noise in rural areas.
In 2007, traffic noise was the primary issue for people. 64 million and 34 million people were influenced by the noise during the day in the cities and the rural areas, respectively. The number was lower at night in both locations, with 48 million of individuals in the urban areas and 24 million of individuals in rural areas. Regarding noise by train, 10 million people were affected by it in the cities during daytime. The figure for it moderately dropped to 8 million people at night, which was equal to the number of people who were influenced by trains during the day in rural areas. There was a dip of 6 million people at night for noise pollution caused by trains in rural areas.
With regard to aircraft, while the number of individuals affected by noise in the cities doubled those in the rural areas during the day, the data for both locations all declined to 1 million people at night. Additionally, 1 million and 0.25 million were distracted by industrial noise during the day and night in the urban areas respectively. No data was recorded in the rural areas.
