The two given charts illustrate the proportions of residents who use public transport and personal cars in five cities of Australia involving Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and Melbourne between 2000 and 2010.
Overall, it is immediately apparent that the percentage of travelling via public transportation shows varied changes, while that of private vehicles witnessed an increase in all five cities. In addition, in a city, the more people use public transport, the fewer people travel by private vehicles.
Looking at the public transport’s chart in detail, the rate of people using public transport in Sydney was the highest with around 18% in 2010. Despite experiencing some minor fluctuations, the figures for Canberra and Adelaide remained unchanged, compared with their starting points. Moreover, in Perth and Melbourne, the trend of using public transportation became increasingly popular, rising more than 1% in both cities over a 10-year period.
The remaining chart saw an opposite trend with a preference for private vehicles. Melbourne was the leading category of using personal cars, reaching its peak at 85% in 2010. This was followed by a significant growth of Canberra, Adelaide, Perth and Sydney with 80%, 68%, 40% and 22%, respectively.
