The graph compared the percentage of person’s total spending in a particular European nation was spent on various commodities and services between 1958 and 2008.
Overall, there was an increase in the proportion of housing, food, travel/transport and entertainment, while a decrease was witnessed in the share of clothing and luxury goods. In addition, the most significant decrease was registered in the percentage of food.
Looking first at housing, food and clothing, the percentage of food started at 32%, which was higher than that of housing and clothing reaching at 22% and 18% in 1958, respectively. After that, a dramatic decrease was seen in the proportion of food and clothing in 2008 ending at 12% and 16%, respectively, the percentage of housing showed an opposite change, which increased to 32% in 2008.
Turning to travel/transport, entertainment, luxury goods, 13% of the percentage of entertainment in 1958, with a subsequent dropping to 6%. By contrast, the figures for travel/transport and luxury goods increased starting at 8% and 7% in 1958, respectively, and reaching similarly at 17% in 2008.
