Overall, what stands out is that housing accounted for the largest proportions in both years, whereas entertainment represented the smallest figures. It is also evident that food and clothing decreased over the period.
In 1958, Food recorded the highest figure at approximately 32%. This was distantly followed by, housing which stood at 22%. Clothing and entertainment ranked third and fourth, making up 18% and 13% respectively. By contrast, Travel/transport and Luxury goods constituted almost the similar rates, at 8% and 7%.
Turning to 2008, the distribution had changed significantly. Housing became the dominant category, increasing to 32%. This was distantly followed by Luxury goods and Travel/transport, making up equal proportions, at 17% each. Meanwhile, clothing and meal showed the lower rates at 16% and 12% respectively. In contrast, Enjoyment comprised the lowest figure, at just 6% of the total.
