The pie charts compare the ratio of people’s total expenditure in a particular European country that was paid for commodities and services between 1958 and 2008.
Overall, it is obvious that the percentage of housing, transportation and luxury goods experienced a significant increase, while those for remaining units witnessed an opposite trend. It was also highlighted that in 1958, sales of food dominated the market but in 2008, it was surpassed by sales of housing.
Regarding the growth categories, there was a sharp jump of 10% in the spending for housing, reaching the peak of 32%. In 2008, 17% of the expenditure of people paid for travel, which was double that in 1958. Furthermore, at the beginning time, sales of luxury goods stood at 7%, achieving 17% after 50 years.
Conversely, from 1958 to 2008, there was a dramatic decrease in sales of food, which was 32% and 12%. Moreover, people spent on clothing, which experienced a slight decline, by 2%. Finally, in 1958, 8% of total expenditure was paid for entertainment, which was double than that in 2008.
